Alexander F. Barron was the original captain of a company of Texas saints headed for Salt Lake. However, Preston Thomas was later chosen, since he had more experience with Indians and he had already crossed the plains previously. Alexander, his family, and most of the company halted their trek west, for winter, near the mouth of the Verdigris River not far from Fort Gibson, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). The company reassembled under Washington L. Jolley in 1854.
