Alma is the son of Thomas Callahan and Lucinda Shipman Austin Callahan. His father left with with the Mormon Battalion. His mother took his younger siblings with her in 1848 to Utah. He was left behind with his grandparents, William and Agnes Austin. He came with them in 1852.
