Amos Chase (1841 - 1880) Profile

Amos Chase

Amos Chase was born in Nauvoo to John Darwin Chase, Sr. and Priscilla Ann McHenry. Priscilla did not follow the others to Utah when the Saints were expelled from Nauvoo. She took her son, James, and returned to Iowa. Amos remained with his father, John, until he joined the Mormon Battalion. Just a boy, Amos was left with his aunt and uncle, Amy and Jacob G. Bigler. Some accounts suggest that Amos came to Utah with his aunt and uncle. Amy and Jacob traveled with the Benjamin Gardner Company (1852), however, Amos appears on the 1850 Utah census with his father, step-mother, and siblings which indicates that Amos arrived to Utah prior to 1850. More research is required to determine how and when Amos arrived to Utah.
