Ann Maria crossed the Atlantic with her mother, Catherine Robbins Broomhead, and her sister Ellen Jane on the ship Emblem in 1849.

By the time of the 1850 federal census they were in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

Ann's father, William Broomhead, and a married sister, Mary Ann Broomhead Wheelock, arrived in 1852.

Mary Ann Wheelock and her mother then crossed the plains in the Allen Weeks Company of that year. Ann Maria, her sister Ellen Jane and their father traveled to Salt Lake City this same year, but the name of the pioneer company with which they traveled is unknown. Additional research is needed to determine the name of the pioneer company.

Her death date is confirmed by her Massachusetts Death Certificate that appears with her entry in FamilySearch.  At the time of her death, her surname was "Shepherd."
