Asahel Goodrich Talcott
Asahel initially traveled to the Salt Lake Valley as a Captain of Ten in the Ezra T. Benson Company in 1849. However, he later participated as one of the rescuers sent out in the winter of 1856 to assist the members of the Church stranded in Wyoming.
Asahel received a Patriarchal Blessing from John Smith on 27 October 1845. He appears in the 1850 federal census living in Great Salt Lake City with seven other individuals having the same surname but none of these crossed the plains with Asahel (additional research is needed.) In the records of the Utah Territorial Militia Asahel is "A. Talcut" and "A. Talcot." He was re-baptized on 27 April 1851 by Ezekiel Lee of Big Cottonwood. At the time of the 1852 Bishops Report Asahel was living at Big Cottonwood. In 1855 he paid tithing at Big Cottonwood and in 1857 he Consecrated $260.00 to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the time of the 1880 federal census he is "Aschel" Talcott living at Ogden, Utah.
His birth and death dates are confirmed by the Utah State History Cemeteries and Burials Database.
In some documents his surname is spelled "Talcot,' "Talcut," "Tolcut," and "Talcout."
