Benjamin made the trip to America with the John Evan Evans (born 9 September 1818) family. He is seen with this family on the passenger list for The General McClellan, arriving in New York on 23 June 1864. He is also seen in the Spanish Fork Ward records with Evans family at the time of a rebaptism on 20 November 1864. In that record, he is listed as Benjamin EVANS, with "Williams" written above the line after the fact. He likely lived with the Evans family for a time after their arrival in the Valley.

However, he is not on the Warren Company records with John, his wife and daughter. Neither is John's son, David Evans, who was the same age as Benjamin. It is likely that both boys hired out as teamsters for one of the emigrant wagon trains that season to pay their passage across the plains. Further research is needed to determine if they were teamsters in the Warren company or if they traveled with one of the other 1864 companies.
