The overland company roster indicates that his father, Augustinius, purchased 4 1/2 adult food rations for the journey. It is likely he and the rest of the family were with him as they all crossed the ocean together via the ship Humboldt, arriving in New York on 18 July 1866.

Some sources list his surname as "Nielsen" and his given name as "Carl Hagel".
