Caroline initially traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 with the Daniel Spencer/Perrigrine Sessions Company, according to her relative, Jesse Nathaniel’s journal.  She traveled with her husband, Thomas Callister, and his second wife and daughter, Helen Marr Clark and Helen Marr.

Other members of his family in the same company were her parents, John Smith and Clarissa Loomis Lyman, her brother, John Lyman Smith and his wife Augusta Bowen Cleveland. 

Caroline's brother, George Albert Smith, had traveled prior to the rest of the family with the Brigham Young Pioneer Company in 1847.  According to Jesse Nathaniel Smith’s journal, the rest of the Smith family met George Albert Smith traveling east with a group including Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, and Willard Richards.  They camped one day together and then parted ways and resumed their separate journeys.
