Charlotte's mother (Charlotte Wrighton Winkless) died when she was very young. Her father (Thomas Winkless) remarried a Mary Palmer, both of whom died in 1849 in St. Louis. Charlotte and her half-brother and half-sister, Mary Eliza and Joseph Thomas, were both taken in by her step-mother's brother, James Weaver Palmer. It was with him and his wife that the three children crossed the plains to the Valley.

The girls are in James Palmer's household at the time of the 1850 federal census (under the Palmer surname), which confirms that they would have traveled with him and his wife. The Seventh Ward records show the two girls with James and Mary Ann Palmer at the time of a rebaptism on 17 June 1852. The Seventeenth Ward record shows Charlotte (with the married name of Wilkin) being rebaptized again on 21 March 1857, but this record lists the names of her birth parents, Charlotte and Thomas Winkless, and confirms her birthdate.
