In the 1850 federal census David and his family (Nancy, Mary, David, William and Lucy) appear in Pottawattamie County, Iowa under the surname "Dixon." On 29 November 1851 his name appears in the Utah Territorial Militia records at Cottonwood in Salt Lake County but on 31 January 1852 he was in American Fork. The Deseret News reported him as a member of the Second Quorum of Seventy living in Utah County on 19 February 1853. By the time of the 1856 Utah Territorial Census he was living at Cedar City, Iron County apparently with his son David. In 1860 he was living at San Bernardino, California with his family consisting of: Nancy, David M. William W. Lucy L., Edward D. and George W.
Contemporary documents do not say when Nancy Dickson and her children crossed the plains however, a child was born in Missouri in 1849, and another in Utah in 1852 but the latter’s month of birth is unknown.”
