Daughter of William Cox Smithson and his wife Lucinda. In 1846 the Smithsons traveled from Mississippi to Fort Pueblo in what is now Colorado; in 1847 they journeyed from Pueblo to Salt Lake City so Fereba would have been two years old when she arrived in Utah Territory. In the 1850 Utah census Fereba is shown as "Alvira." In the 1860 census she is "Faraby E. Smithson. Her married name was Rowland so in the 1880 census she is "Elvira Rowland." Utah Cemetery Inventory shows her as "Serbea A. Smithson Rowland." Her tombstone reads "Ferebea Alvira Rowland."
