Frederick, his wife (Sarah Elizabeth Jones) and their children Harriet Louisa, Joseph Hyrum and Elizabeth Jane) crossed the Atlantic on the ship William Tapscott in 1860 (their surname is spelled "Shoel" on the manifest.  A secondary source by an unknown author says they crossed the plains in the William Budge Company, but their names do not appear on the Budge Company original hand-written roster.  What is certain is that Frederick was ordained a Seventy on 29 November 1860 at Salt Lake City.  Family tradition says that Elizabeth Jane died on the plains, but period documentation is lacking.  Frederick appears in the records of the Utah Territorial Militia in October of 1866 and with his surviving family (Sarah, Joseph and Louisa) in the 1870 federal census of Utah at Pleasant Grove, Utah County.
