Due to war between France and Germany, he was left as the acting mission president in October 1939. In February 1940, he was married by special permission from the First Presidency to Flore Guillemine Catherine Lahon. A few months later, in May, he received a telegram from the First Presidency directing him to close the mission home in Paris.
