George Alfred Smith, Sr.
George Alfred Smith, his wife and two sons, arrived in New York on 31 May 1865 via the ship Belle Wood. George Sr. and his wife continued on to the Valley the following year with the Scott company. Only George Sr.'s name is included on the overland company records as head of household, but it shows that he purchased two adult food rations for that portion of the journey. One son (Hector) married in New York and did not come west. The other son (George Jr.) may have gone ahead in 1865 or hired out with another company as a teamsters, but he did not travel with his parents in the 1866 Scott company.
