George and most of his family crossed the Atlantic on the ship American Congress in 1866.  The following individuals appear on the New York, Passenger arrivals list: George (age 53), Elizabeth (age 40), Theresa (age 25), Elizabeth (age 20), Susan (age 18), James (age 14), Mary A. (age 8) and John H. (age 4).  Their transportation costs were covered by a loan from the Perpetual Emigrating Fund. Theresa (Thurza) and Susan (Susannah) married in New York and remained behind when other family members departed for Utah in 1868.  The Deseret News roster for the Seeley Company lists George as traveling with his wife but, to date, we have found no record that Elizabeth William George actually came to Utah; nor is there evidence that Mary Ann and John H. came west.  The woman listed as George's wife was probably his daughter Elizabeth Ann who immigrated on the ship Colorado in 1868 and whose grave is in Utah.  Additional research is needed to discover what happened the the three family members for whom we find no records in Utah.

Apparently, George was given the surname of "Gibbs" at the time of his birth, but about 1855 he began using "Bishop" as his surname.  The ship manifest shows his surname as "Bishop."
