Henry, a shoemaker, crossed the Atlantic from Liverpool to New Orleans on the ship Carnatic in 1848 with Mary, age 25, and Eliza, age 20. In the 1850 census of Pottawattamie County, Iowa he appears as Henry Morgrage, a shoemaker who was sharing a dwelling with Henry Palmer, another shoemaker. Palmer, a member of the Edward Hunter pioneer company, recorded in his reminisences that he "secured the services assistance of Henry Megridge who carefully drove my team. . . ." In the 1850 federal census of Utah, taken in early 1851, Henry is listed as Henry Mogridge, a shoemaker of Parowan, Iron County.
