Evidence from genealogical records proves that Jacob traveled to Utah in 1851 or 1852. He does not appear on the 1850 Utah census, and the first documentation to place him in Utah is his marriage to Hannah Gailey Jones in 1852. Further research is needed to determine the year he came to Utah and the name of the company he traveled with. His birth year is confirmed by the inscription on his gravestone and Payson ward records. Find a Grave says that "his military records state that he was born 20 April 1773," but young men were known to added years to their age so that they would be allowed to serve. It is likely that the church records and his gravestone give his correct birth date.
