. . . venison and on the 18th Capt. [James] Brown returned from Santafee [Santa Fe] with our money to this time weather changeable on the evening of the 24th I started to hard scrabble or white oake [Oak] creek nearing 30 mi &amp; with an attachment went to attach property[.] returned the 26th in the evening[.] all the detachments having started for Larimy [Fort Laramie] the day before I went up fountain kabacia 3 or 4 m, staid with Capt [Nelson] Higgins all night[.] overtook Co. next day som 36 ms from <s>kabacia</s> pueblow [Pueblo] 3 ms above crossing kabacia Co having got there the 26th[.] Staid heare till the morning of the 30th and pursuid our march 20 ms to Jimmys camp and encamped for the night. This evening we were visited with a cold rane with wind and some haile before we could pich our tenst [tents] which rendered it verry dissagreable



31st took up line of march some 18 ms to Stony point, encamped for the night this event in crosing the divide before we got here it hailed and rained verry hard which was verry bad on us and our anamils. this night I was officer of the gard and about 9 ocloc it so hard I got leave of our capt to relieve the garrd but being verry wet and cold I had verry little rest all night



June 1st took line of march some 15 ms to <s>Stony</s> &lt;Cherry crick [Creek]&gt; and encamped for the night This evening I picked a mess of greens made a churn staff and dasher and some of the boys killed a she bare of the black kind tolerable pork.



2nd we took up line some 15 ms down same creek and encamped for the night



3rd this morning we took up line some 16 or 17 ms and encamped on the s fork of the river Plat[te] for the night



4th we took up line of march 18 ms and after passing 2 forts luptons and some other encamped for the night peace off river



5th This day took march for crosing some ten ms crossed went down som six ms and encamped for a season[.] the bank of it at this place it is about 3 hundred yds wid[e] from 3 to 6 feet deepe



6th This day qu[i]te pleasant I washed 3 shirts and wamunes [women's] haversack and handkerchief[.] we are now in the fork of the plat[te] and Cash LaPoode [Cache La Poudre River] <s>at which we have</s>



7th this morning we took up line of march crosed cash Lapoode marched 15 ms and encamped for the night on drye creek or rathar [rather] for a season to water for our beef cattle



8th this S[ebert] d Shelton came with our beef cattle[.] I am now called to attend to the gard



9th this morning we marched up dry creek some 12 ms and are encamped for the nighit with orders to cook 2 days on the expectation of not having the privilege of wood



10th we took up line of march some 20 ms and encamped on a small creek the name of which I have not learned but from appearance I am pleased to call it little Sandy or cleare creek



11th this morning <s>shortly after</s> we took up march went to <s>20</s> &lt;18&gt; ms encamped in a bottom on a small branch of horse creek[.] this evening Amasa liman [Lyman,] woley[,] Tibbet and R Stevens came to our camp which gave som of us much satisfaction Others disstress of mind at any rate it gave us an other chance to part with one dollar more of our hard earnings it was joy and grief to me



12th we took up line of march 20 ms encamped for the night on an other branch of horse creek[.] this day shortly after we started we killed 2 bufalow [buffalo] in pretty good order



13th This morning marched 5 ms and encamped on horse creek till the morrow[.] this creek takes its name from the many heards of horses having ben seen and caught heare 3 ocloc this day the detachments being caled together[.] Elder Limon [Lyman] delivered a verry appropriate address in relation to our going to California and carry out the principles for which we inlisted in connection with which he also gave us some <s>varya</s> verry able council and instruction &amp;c which verry consoling he having done it with the spirrit of niceness



14th this morning a detachment of 11 being sent on to Laramy[.] I being one of that number to find some stolen horses[.] we traviled some 40 ms and lodged all night on a branch some 6 ms from Larimy



15th when we got in about 1-1/2 ms of there on a high hill we were meet by a war party of the Souix [Sioux] Indians who made a verry hostile apperarance being mou[n]ted on horseback well armed with bows arrows guns speers,etc. there was not fare [far] from 100 tha[t] seen us at a distance supposed us to have ben the Crow Indians with whom tha [they] were at war but finding the mistake tha all commenced shaking hands with us and you may depende tha went the whole hog as that tha gladly escorted us to Laramy[.] this evening we found some of the horses neare Larimy in the hands of some Frenchman who dwelt in lodgs[.] we sent our express back for more help and we lay under a tree this night



16th this day an additional attachment came to our assistance and we took what we could find and returned back a short distance to camp



17th we took up march crosed river by blocking wagons and went some 4 ms &amp; encamped for the night.



18th We marched 16 ms &amp; encamped for the night.



19th This day we traviled some 17 ms to willow branch &amp; encamped till munday.



20th This day Elder limon gave us all a good whipping at 2 ocloc and a great deal of good council in relation to the corse we should take



21st this day we marched 12 mi. crosed horse shue [Horseshoe] river little further &amp; encamped on a small streame for the night good water.



22 we took up march some 15 ms through or over the black hills crosing several pretty streems of water &amp; crosed a butiful streame of water to apearince an excelent mill privaledge[.] this streame is called by Indians Man I shall call it black creek from <s>its afte</s> its having its location through the black hills on which we encamped for the night.



23rd we took march over the black &amp; lead hills crosing some small streams principly dry crosed deer creek a pretty stream of water and encamped on its bank to waite for [Nelson] higgins detachment[.] this day we traviled 18 ms this day we kiled a grsley [grizley] &amp; one cub



24th Verry warme



25th We took up march traviled 18 ms[.] T[homas] Williams kills a first rate buffalo[.] we encamped on on mane plat at the mouth of big deer creek.



26th we marched 16 ms. &amp; encamped on the plat



27th this day we marched up to the ferry 4 ms[.] the pioneers established it[.] we encamped for a season to get blacksmthing done



28th This day 15 of us ware detaled to overtake the Pioneers &amp; we left long 10 o cloc a m[.] traviled some 18 ms and took a recess of an houre or 2 and some refreshment &amp; good springs heare[.] this day went some 31 ms to brackish water or purlash swamp



29th came 5 ms to willow springs this day went some 27 ms struck Sweete water [Sweetwater,] independent [Independence] rock[.] went 6 ms to Devils gate and stoped for the night



30th Took up march 30 ms up river to sweete and stoped for the night a greate deal of sand from ferry heare or to this place wood scarce but good water &amp; feede and rocky mountains on the right[.] this day indeede and a range of timber on the left on the left



July the first we took up march 32 ms to mountain springs and encamped for the night.



2nd we took up marched 40 ms and lade own ground this this day[.] we crosed the divide imediately on the west side of from Laramy [Laramie] said great divide 280ms[.] here we came to the green springs or pacific springs[.] the waters of which run into the greate pacific[.] this is a verry greate boiling spring surrounded by a qua[g]mire[.] water verry cold



&amp; same 32 ms[.] &lt;laid&gt; on the bank of a branch top big sandy[.] feed verry scarce



4th this day we went some 10 ms to ferry of green river the pioneers having moved some 2 ms below shortly after we got thare brigum [Brigham Young] and some of the 12 meet meet and ferryed us over and escorted down to there camp[.] we were received with three cheers of hosanna to god and the Lamb by Brigum and all the rest with amen &amp; amen



5th this day we marched 20 ms to a streem called blacks fork and encamped for the night. good feed heare[.] some brush for wood[.] this day traviled 18 ms and cared sd creek some 4 times[.] we crosed and encamped on it for the night.



7th we took up line of march 17-3/4 miles to bridger after crossing the before mentioned black fork some 4 or 5 times and encamped for the night[.] black fork divides into various branches heare some 4 or 5 feede plenty heare



8th this morning frost this day the pioneers lay by to get something don this forest is in latitude 41-19-13 the earth heare is 6665 feete above the level of the great pacific.



9th this 6 of us started back to meete company.



10th 2 oclock this day got to the ferry &amp; encamped



11th 10 o clock Am Elder Brannan &amp; myself left to meet company



12th meet them 10 ms of green springs 100 ms from Bridger



17th after breakfast I left my mess because I was not able to please the mistress and I believe no boddy else could who wishes to do rite[.] from which time I eat nothing till evening except a few mouthfuls of dryed buffaloe



18th Nothing worth noting



19th This day we arived at fort brgger [Bridger] &amp; encamped for the night.



20th took up march 15 ms to a small &lt;branch&gt; of black fork and encamped for night.



21st we took up march through a verry mountainous &lt;shruby&gt; country pased through a long narrow valley or 2 and into an other to a firstrate spring in side of the bluff to left hand neare which we encamped for the night on a small stream of baer [bear] river



22nd. this morning we marched 16½ ms to the cave springs and encamped for the night good feede wood scarce land good pararie smooth some 47 mi from heare to bridger



23d this morning we took up march down same valley some 17 or 18 ms the first part of which was smothe [smooth] pararie &lt;well set in grass&gt; the balance rough s[c]rubby brushey &amp; rough[.] on the south the side a chane of high ball mountains <s>on the north high</s> and on the north of this narrow valley a chane also of high rocky mountains[.] a part of this valley is covered with gooseberrys[,] courents [currents.] read [red] and yellow and white thorne <s>scrubby oake</s> and willows[.] along this little branch we pased several good springs and encamped for the night amongst the willows[.] the mountains heare on either side are verry high



24th this morning we pased down this valley some 7 ms to wever [Weber] Creek and turned down it to the rite one mile or upwards NW co[u]rse and encampecd for the night[.] this valley upwards of 80 rods wide &amp; geese flew over this evening[.] we have quite a refreshing shower this evening



25th we lay by this day to rest our teams and do some washing[.] 3 pm Elder Limornon delivered a sermon in which he gave rich enstructions and counsel without favor or affections



26th we took up march some 15 ms after going down the stream some 2 ms crosed over to left kenyon [canyon] north southeast up an other and encamped for night.



Just this side of crosing hundreds of acres of firstrate farme land well watered springs plenty &amp;tc currents, goosberies &amp;tc in greate plenty &amp;tc &amp;tc black read [red] yellow &amp;tc



27th we took up march kenyan [Canyon] creek several ms &amp; after crossing it 10 times we left it and turned to rite, up a kenyan[,] up a gradual assent through grove of fur pine[,] small shugar [sugar,] and various kinds of under groth [undergrowth] the grove continues neare the summit[.] this mountain farom [from] said summit I had the most sublime the most commanding and the most glorious view my eyes ever beheld[.] I was filled with admiration and delite at the grand appearence of the towering mountains of Israel[.] from this summit pased down a kenyon of thick timber come to small branch <s>in</s> &amp; a short distance from summit went down into open valley and encamped for the night[.] this day some 15 ms

My next trouble was to know how to go across the plains, one thousand miles. I hadn't money to pay my fare and my case looked rather dark, as all the trains that hired men to drive teams had gone. I finally succeeded making a contract with a man by the name of Jarvis to take me across the plains. I was to fix up his wagons and milk his cows on the journey. Therefore, in the beginning of July the company moved out on the plains and was organized. There were about one hundred wagons and Job Smith was appointed captain.
 On the first part of the journey nothing of interest occurred except the running away of cattle, breaking up of wagons, getting stuck in the mud, a great deal of which was in consequence of unskilled drivers. While crossing a creek at what is called the Catholic Mission, not far from Big Blue, one man got drowned. He was sick and while crossing a log, he fell in and was drowned before anyone knew it.
 We arrived close to Fort Carney [Kearny] where we encountered a terrific storm, the water rising so high that our cattle were stampeded and we had to remain there two days. Finally we took up our line of march and passed along the Platte River on the south side until we got to Ash Hollow. We camped there and drove our cattle across the Platte to feed. I was one who was detailed to cross the river and herd the cattle. Being very tired, I laid down and went to sleep. I was roused up by suddenly by something rattling. I looked and there was a great rattle snake ready to make a jump. Having seen many of them on our travels and hearing many incidents related to them, I dared not move for fear he would bit me. Finally I made one spring and got out of his way. Fortunately for his snakeship there was nothing I could kill him with than a buffalo chip.
 At this place we encountered Captain [Darwin] Richardson's Company which had started one week ahead of us. He made his brags that he could beat us into Salt Lake City by two weeks. We told him all right, but we thought not. We then traveled on and crossed the South Fork of the Platte. The river being dangerous to ford, we got as many as ten and twenty yoke of cattle on to one wagon. I crossed the Platte that day about six times, it being about one-half mile wide. Rest assured that when night came I was ready for sleep.
 When we came within ten miles of Fort Laramie we encountered the Sioux Nation of Indians, 6,000 strong. They were a noble race of people, of fine physique. They were making chiefs. Their method was to form a circle, stick secures [skewers] through the breast, twist a rope around them and the one that could endure to walk around this circle the longest was considered the greatest chief.
 The next day the Danish Company came up. The Indians took two of the cows and killed them. The captain reported at the garrison of Fort Laramie what the Indians had done. A company with one cannon and an Indian interpreter were then ordered to go and demand the[y] pay for the cattle. While parleying with the Indians there was a misunderstanding between the chief and the interpreter. The captain ordered one of the men to shoot the chief, which he did, and in less than twenty minutes the Indians killed all the company, broke their cannon and threw it into the Platte. There was then great fear that the Indians would take Fort Laramie. Men were sent in every direction to all posts around to make forced marches to get out of the way. Our company traveled all that day and that night in the Black Hills. We had been without water for one day, when we caught up with the company, James Brown of Ogden, being captain. He told us we could not stop, for there was not enough water for his company and ours and that he would shoot the first oxen unyoked. A man by the name of John Hill, who drove the team ahead of me, said, "All right, we will see." He stepped up to his wagon and got out his blunderbus, then went up to Old Buck and let him out of the yoke. "Now," he said, "Shoot." Captain Brown saw that it was no use to resist any longer and concluded we could stay.
 Arriving at Platte Bridge, it was thought best to divide the company into three parts. Here an incident occurred which seemed as though I was to be left on the plains, for Mr. [Henry John] Jarvis' provisions had given out and he told me he could not take me any further. Still I had found a friend in Mr. [John] Ford, now living in Centerville, Utah. He had lost two of his sons who had died of cholera. Mr. Ford told me he would be glad if I would come and drive his team and the change was a blessing to me for I had to suffer many indignities from Mr. Jarvis. I drove Mr. Ford's team till he arrived at Salt Lake City, which was on the twenty third day of September, and we had made our camp at Jordan Bridge.

May 24 Started &amp; came 8 miles and camped[.] a guard was then placed to prevent any one from taking our animals



25 Started and came 23 miles this day[.] a severe Hail storm came on us &amp; we had to lay down in the wett



Saturday 28 this day we started &amp; came miles 18 to a place called Jamey’s Camp named after that same James that the High peeke was named after[.] we have been lying still since Tuesday to this day



Sunday 30 Came 18 miles over a most beautifull rolling prieri [prairie] &amp; through some pine timber to point of rocks



Monday 31 Came from the point of rocks to cherry Creek a distance of miles 20[.] pine plenty



Tuesday 1st June 1847 
Came 20 miles and camped on Cherry Creek[.] there are plenty of grass &amp; a good country



Wednesday 2 Came 18 miles &amp; camped



3. Came 20 miles &amp; camped on the South fork of the Platt[e][.] This Evening <s>Sgt Shelton</s> Dr [William Walker] Rust came up and told us that Sgt [Sebert Crutcher] Shelton lost all His horses[.] It is now 145 miles from Pueblo



4 this morning Captn [James] Brown called a vote to se how many men would up hold him &amp; stand by him to cary out all commands that ware wright[.] we passed 4 trading houses this day[,] one of them had a 6 pounder in it[.] feed scarce[.] camped after coming miles 20



Satturday 5 started &amp; came 9 miles to the crossing[.] there is one old fort here[.] crossed the Platt[e] about 12 oclock and came 9 miles and camped on its banks

Monday 7 started &amp; came 24 miles crossed the Cashley Poud [Cache La Poudre River] named so by some Frenchman that hid some powder[.] crossed Crow Creek[.] there are neither feed[,] wood nor watter but an abundant crop of prickly pears



Tuesday 8 lay too all day



Wednesday 9 Shelton come up with 10 oxon &amp; two cows which ware after wards sold[.] one to Captn Brown for 13½ and the other to David Linghland [Laughlin] for 20 dollars



Thur 10 Came 20 miles and camped on Sand Creek



Friday 11 Came 20 miles and camped on poll creek[.] there is a good spring here[.] after we got our Tents pitched there was a cry made that Wolsy &amp; Tippets was come with Amas A Lyman [Amasa M. Lyman.] I went with all Speed &amp; found it so



Satt 12 came on to horse Creek 18 miles



Sund 13 this day had Elder Ama E to preach[.] he said to leave off our cards playing &amp; profane swearing and return to God and a great many other things[.] he said we were not as bad as he expected to find us[.] Capt Bn then got up and made an axknowledge ment &amp; said he had just played one game and how he had kept up publick worshp &amp; preaching twice a week

Wednsy 16 Started &amp; came 20 miles to Larimays Fork[.] about 50 of us upon horses to get some of the Brethrens horses that had been stolen[.] got the Horses came back &amp; camped[.] Men on guard that night[.] there are about 70 Lodges of Sooes [Sioux] camped here[.] We came 20 miles this day



Thurs 17 Crossed the river &amp; came 6 miles and camped by the North fork



Friday 18 Came 18 miles and camped by a warm Spring



19 Came 17 miles and camped by a good Spring[.] we are passing some of the mile boards[.] 17 of June



Sunday 20 Lay too all day[.] Amos E Lyman preached &amp; said he had watched us and to leave of our folly and be men of God and then captain Bn got up and made acknowlegements of his faults and said he had been hit very hard[.] he then went on to run down his boys and Said one man had the Ausumption to contradict him in plceing out a picket guard and said it is not worth while to plant them on the top of an high hill after dark for the cant see and said he was not going to be counceled by any private Soldier[,] his councellars was offiers[.] I am the man and I tried it and could neither heare nor se



Monday 21 Came 21 miles and camped the missoury[.] Cattle are dying off with some dstemper or poison[.] good watter



22 came 15 miles &amp; camped on bar creek[,] we are comming through Hills of great hight deep valeys



Wed 23 came 18 miles and Camped on a very fine Stream[.] this day I was on rear guard &amp; dscovered something jumping over the rocks like Indians[.] we poot[put] after it and coming up it raised upon its hind end[.] A large Bear, our horses wheeled and run 50 yards or so[.] ralied them again &amp; charged[.] I chased them 3 about a mile among the rocks[.] it stoped[,] I wheeled and shot hir threw the lights and pecked [packed] her home



Thirs 24 lay to all day



Friday 25 came to the River again and camped by a fine Stream[.] 16 [miles.] got our horses[,] loaded Buffalo



Sat 26 Came 16 miles along the river[.] plenty of Buffalo &amp; good feed



Sun 27 Came 6 miles to the platt[e] where we found Brother Grover &amp; company Buisy Ferrying large companies of missourians accross[.] 150 cts for crossing[.] &lt;from Fort John to the crossing platt 127&gt;



Monday 28 lay too all day[.] about 15 of our Breathren went a head to overtake the Pioneers



Tues 29 Crossed over in the Evening &amp; camped for the night



Wed 31 Came 8 miles and camped by the old crossing[.] Plenty of Oregon Emagrants all the way



Thurs 1st of July 1847 Platt River[.] Came 30 miles &amp; camped by the willow Springs[.] Plenty of wood &amp; watter[,] grass scarce[.] Plenty of antelope[.] I came across a place in the mountains that is hollow[.] I could find no bottom[.] the lava boils up when you remove &lt;the&gt; surface



Friday 2 Came 20 miles through the mountains and found Several lakes covered with Soleretus [Saleratus.] the watters taists like Strong Epsom salts[.] Camped by Independent [Independence] Rock on Sweet watter[.] there are Snow to be seen on the mountains



Sat 3 came 10 camped by Sweet watter[,] plenty of feed



Sund 4 Sent a company of hunters out, towards night on Monday our Hunters returned Loaded heavy with meat



Tuesday 6 lay too all day to dry our meat



Wednes 7 came 18 miles good road Snow to be seen



Thurs 8 came 14 miles over a sandy road met Phenes [Phineas] Young[,] Brother Walker &amp; others going back to meet the families



Friday 9 came 23 miles through sand[.] Camped by Sweet watter [Sweetwater.] there are a number of Sick in our camp



Satt 10 Cam 15 miles over the mountains



Sund 11 this day lay too and had a good preach from Amas E



Monday 12 Came this day miles 25 and camped on Sweet watter[.] plenty of Stream. there was an Indian woman came to us about 120 years of age being left by her tribe[.] I guathred [gathered] her about 50 weight and left with her[.] She was thankfull



Tues 13 Came 16 miles and Camped on dry creek[.] this day we came to the highest point of the mountains from whence the watters runs to the pesifick [Pacific][.] thers are called the green Springs the flow West ward



Wed 14 came 20 miles all way down Hill and camped by Sand Creek[.] this Evening Elder brannon left for green river[.] good feed



Thursday 15 Came to big Sandy 20 miles



Friday 16 this morning at Sun up there ware several Shots fired to celebrate the 16 morn that freid [freed] us from U[ncle] Sam[.] came on to green river 8 miles[.] Blocked up our waggon Boxes and crossed[.] the watters is about arms deep



Sattur 17 Came 23 miles and camped on Blacks fork



Sund 18 Came 15 miles crossed Blacks fork &amp; Hams Fork then crossed Blacks fork &amp; camped



Mon 19 came 17 miles and camped by Ft. Bridger[.] bought som Skins[.] Captn Brown bought 5 Horses for 220 dollers for to go to the Bay[.] gave U.S. for them



Tues 20 Came 13 miles and camped this day[.] Brother [William] Casto came back to us from the pioneer camp



Wedns 21 came miles 20 over the mountains[.] at bridgers we are 6665 feet above the Sea[.] plenty of Springs of Iron oar &amp; Coppores &amp; Sulpher[.] Camped two miles from Bear river[.] there is a Greece [grease] or Tar Spring here one mile from our camp S W[.] this evening I heard from Sgt Hanks that captn Brown withdrew five mens rations also 340 pounds that was back retions [rations] blonging to us the time we lay in pueblo and 240 pounds of Flower that was taken out of the Store house Soposed to be Captn Brown



Thurs 22 Came 17 miles this day about 12 miles from Bear River[.] I came through about one achre [acre] of Flax[.] came to Readings Cave and camped



Friday 23 Came 16 miles this day. as I was coming along four miles from where we camped last night I went and discovered a cave about 200 feet high 40 feet long 20 wide[.] I wrote our names in the Rocks on the 23 of July[.] we then found Sugar maple &amp; oak[,] cedar[,] cottonwood &amp; pine[,] Ironwood[,] Birch[,] Curns &amp;c



Satt 24 Came 10 miles through willow brush[.] plenty of Hops[.] rained &amp; thundered at night



Sund 25 lay too[.] Elder Lyman Told us we hadgot out from jentile [gentile] persecution and now we would be troubled with Devils in our own midst and said that there was some of the darkest caractures [characters] here that could be &amp; the offisers were run upon and their orders disobeyed which caused Captn B to get up and ask if he had not acted as a father to us and tell how good he had been[.] not a man spoke becaus we ware told when we would get to head Quartirs all would be Right[.] He is such a Father as the Devil would be to us



Mon 26 Came 15 miles &amp; camped in the willows[.] had considerable trouble to gather our oxon



Tues 27 this day came 13 miles &amp; camped on a fine bottom[.] here Elder Amas E left for the pioneers



Wednes 28 Come 18 miles all the way through brush &amp; Firs[.] come to the Top of the Hill from whence could be seen the valey where our breathren are planting[.] Camped at the bottom of the hill[.] James Oakley &amp; others came to us and said it was 12 mile



Thurs 29 lay too all day and gathered lots of Service berries to our teams would come up



Friday 30 Came on 12 miles to the valey[.] all the Twelve came out to meet us and gave us a hearty welcome[.] when I first came into the valey I killed a wolf



August 1 1847 From the crossing of the Platt to the valey is just 403 [miles.] So much for the comment[.] we marched rank and file to the ground alloted to us

"Immigration", St. Louis luminary, December 2, 1854, Page 6.

IMMIGRATION. – On the 29th November, Captain James Brown and company with 42 wagons, on the 30th, Dr. Darwin Richardson and company with 40 wagons, and on the 1st of October, Elder Daniel Garn and company with 38 wagons, arrived in this city in good condition and camped on Union Square.	
The Church Train is now coming in.	
Elder Robert Campbell, in the rear companies, writes to Govenor Young from Fort Kearney, Aug. 21, that their cattle are fat, the feed and roads good, and that Bro. [William] Emp[e]y and the rear company were only a few days behind them. They were making good headway, and will doubtless be able to escape the inclement weather, as all are probably this side of the South Pass, and perhaps this side of Green river.
