James and his wife, Emma, reached Utah sometime before or during 1853. They appear on the 1870 census which indicates their first child was born in Utah in 1853. More information is needed to determine how and when they traveled to Utah.
They may have traveled with other family members as part of the 1852 David Wood company. However, they are not named on any of the company records.
There is some concern around James's death date. FamilySearch lists his death date as 16 February 1896 in Vernal, Utah. This happens to be the same date and place of death as his brother, John. There is no documentation to support that James died on the same date or in the same place as John.
