Serving as a gold panning missionary in northern California when called by Elder Charles C. Rich on September 25, 1850 to be one of the original missionaries to labor in the Hawaiian Mission. The Elders sailed for Hawaii on November 15, 1850 and arrived on Oahu December 12, 1850. Assigned to labor on the Big Island with Elder Hiram Blackwell.
