Jane Higginson
The following members of the Wood family all crossed the Atlantic on the ship Ashland in 1849: Samuel Wood Sr. (1819-1849) and his wife Jane Higginson Wood (1819-1888;) Stephen Wood (1821-1849) and his wife Mary Ann Raybold and their children: John, Henrey and Stephen; George Wood, his wife Jane Wood Wood (George’s cousin) and their children: Joseph, Ann and Mary.
Samuel Wood Sr., Stephen Wood, and Jane Wood Wood all died before beginning the trek across the plains. George, and his two sisters-in-law—Jane Higginson Wood and Mary Ann Raybould Wood were each re-baptized on 28 April 1850 at Salt Lake City. George married Jane H. Wood in December 1850. In the 1850 federal census of Utah (taken in early 1851) the household oh George Wood (age 29) included two of his children: Joseph (age 8) and Ann (age 5), his new wife, Jane Higginson Wood (age 32), and his nephew Samuel Wood (age 4).
