In the 1856 Utah Territorial census the surname is spelled "Ipsyson." The 1900 federal census confirms the year of immigration.
The family sailed to America in 1854 on the ship Jesse Munn. The ship manifest shows the surnames of Caroline, Elizabeth, and Hansine as "Ipsen," but they were the children of their deceased parents, and came to Utah with their stepfather Jens Ipsen.
