Family tradition states that his wife came to America first with some of her children, and he followed later. The family reunited in Nebraska and came on to Utah together. The obituary of his step-daughter, Nicoline, indicates that the family lived in Omaha for "several years" before crossing the plains in 1857. However, it also indicates that they traveled in the John Brown Company. To the best of our knowledge, there was no John Brown Company that year, but there was one in 1859. It is uncertain whether the obituary has the name of the Company or the date of travel wrong.
