According to his obituary in the Deseret News, Jesse and his wife Mary Adelia Fuller Lewis transported a quartz mill to the Pike's Peak region of Colorado in 1858. After Jesse erected the mill, he sold it and they traveled on to Utah.

According to his dictated history, he arrived to Utah in 1861. More specifically, they arrived at Provo on July 21, 1861.
