At the time of his baptism on 8 June 1862, his birth date was recorded as 6 November 1835 in the Moroni Ward records.

According to a history written during his lifetime, in History of Sanpete and Emery County, he traveled to Utah as part of the U.S. Military and was baptized after he was discharged and he decided to remain in Utah.
