Working in the gold fields of California to gather much needed funds for God's work. In late September, 1850 he was called and set apart by Elder Charles C. Rich to serve in the Sandwich Isles. The group of 10 missionaries sailed to Oahu on November 15, 1850. He labored on Kauai until he sailed home at the end of February, 1851, discouraged because of the difficulty learning the Hawaiian language.
