John arrived in New York on 6 July 1866 via the ship Arkwright. Overland company records list him as traveling alone. His name is crossed out with a notation that he was not to be charged. (Probably for his food rations and/or luggage.) This could have been for a couple different reasons. It is possible he wasn't charged because he hired out to drive team for the company. Or, it is possible he wasn't charged because he didn't actually travel across the plains that year. He is also seen crossing the plains in 1868 with his parents and siblings. It is uncertain whether or not he returned to the east two years later to accompany his family back to the Valley, or if he remained in the east for two years and continued on to the Valley when the rest of his family arrived. Further research is needed.
