John, his father Alexander, mother Helen and sister Martha traveled to America on the ship Berlin arriving in New Orleans 23 October 1849. His mother and sister Martha both died on the ship. His father died 1851 in St. Louis, Missouri. He came to Utah with his grandparents John and Janet Stoddard.
His surname is spelled "Stoddart" on the 1849 ship Berlin.
