The 1860 Utah census shows his surname as "Kinky," and the 1870 Utah census shows his surname as "Kinkey."  The inscription on his gravestone shows his birth and death years as 1832-1900 and his surname as "Kienke."  The Utah State History Cemeteries and Burials Database confirms his death date as 15 May 1900 and his surname is "Kienke" on that record.

In 1856 he paid tithing while living in Nephi, Utah.

John's name appears on Militia records on 22 October 1855.

The first documentation to place him in Utah is his marriage to Sarah Barbara Pitchforth on 22 November 1853.  Further research is needed to determine the year of his arrival in Utah and the name of the pioneer company with which he traveled.
