John, his wife (Eleanor Oakes Long), their daughter (Eleanor [Jr.])  and  son (John Varah Long [Jr.]) embarked for America on the ship Windermer 22 February 1854.  John Jr. died of "smallpox and inflammation" on April 15 while at sea.  Church ordinance records prove that John was in Utah by late December 1854.
