He married Sarah Wool and they crossed the Atlantic on the ship Kennebec in 1852. According to a secondary source, they crossed the plains until 1859, but this is incorrect. In his diary, John states that he was "call'd on by Elder John Tailor [Taylor] to go with my team and waggon to protect him and Elder Erastus Snow on the plains." He stayed with the Miller Company until July 9th, then turned around and went back. 

In the 1860 Utah census they were living in the Salt Lake City Third Ward.
