Brigham Young sent John, who was a miller, to Kaysville to establish a "flouring mill" and on 20 July 1854 the Deseret News carried a notice that the mill was now in operation but at the time of the 1856 Utah Territorial census John john appears with his two wives--Alice and Eleanor (Ellen)--in Salt Lake City. He was a president of the 31st Quorum of Seventy. His surname is spelled various ways in contemporary documents: Weinal, Wienel, Winal, Wynel, Wynall.

The years of his birth and death are confirmed by the inscription on his gravestone which shows his name as "John Weinel."
