Joseph Lorenzo Hyde

A biographical sketch in Portrait: Genealogical and Biographical Record of the State of Utah says that Joseph Hyde "crossed the plains to Utah in the latter forties."  His name first appears in the records of the Utah Territorial Militia at Salt Lake City in September 1850.  He married Tabitha Lavina Billingsley at Salt Lake City in February 1851 and he and his bride appear together in the 1850 federal census of Utah which was taken in early 1851.  They later helped to colonize San Bernardino County, California but returned to Utah when the Saints were facing Johnston's Army.  At the time of the 1860 federal census they were living at Beaver City, Beaver County, Utah.  According to Portrait, Joseph "took up mining, and at Stockton building the first smelter in Utah County, for Patrick Conner, at the time Commander of Fort Douglas.  He later located the Sunbeam mine, the first to be located in the Tintic district . . ..  He was also at one time policeman in Salt Lake City."  He died at Nephi.
