The family crossed the Atlantic on the ship John J. Boyd arriving in New York on 15 February 1856. Her name is listed as "Ottine" on the ship manifest.
Otena's obituary (Mrs. Teany Thomas) says the family arrived in Utah by handcart in 1856. Evidence from church records confirms this. In some sources her given name is spelled "Ottina", "Tena or Teany. The parish register of Mosbjerg Hjorring, Denmark lists her name as Ottine Sorensen but the family surname on the ship records is "Nielsen." She Married James Claybourne Thomas Sr. Additional research is needed to identify the name of the pioneer company with which she traveled.
