Evidence from genealogical and census records proves Margaret Mae traveled to Utah in 1850.  She was a widow.  Her husband, Hugh George Johnson died in Winter Quarters in 1850 and she came on to Utah that same year.  She married Elam Cheney in Salt Lake City on 2 May 1851.  Margaret is listed on the 1850 Utah census with her parents.  This census was taken in the spring of 1851.

Her parents and siblings also traveled to Utah with the 1850 James Pace Company.

The inscription on her gravestone shows her name as "Margaret Wimmer Johnson Cheney.
