Martha is the widow of Norman Sharp. In September 1846, as the Mormon Battalion was heading toward Pueblo, Colorado, Norman was accidentally shot in the shoulder and succumbed to his wounds a few days later. In July 1847 at Independence Rock, Martha married Harley Mowry. Accompanied by Martha's daughter, Sarah Ellen Sharp, the three completed the journey to Utah together.
