Mary Elizabeth Binnall
Evidence from census records proves that Mary traveled to Utah by early 1851. She sailed to America in 1848 on the ship Sailor Prince with her family: Thomas (age 65), Ann (age 60), Thomas (age 21), Susan (age 21) and John (age 15) arriving in New Orleans on 20 November 1848; the family surname is spelled "Binnell" on the ship manifest. In the 1850 Utah census (taken in early 1851), Mary was in the household of William Ward and his sister Susannah; the fact that Mary is not listed as Mary Binnall implies that she was married to William; but she was re-baptized 17 June 1852 under the name Mary "Binnel." She was sealed to William Ward at his home in the Salt Lake 6th Ward in 1853. At the time of the 1856 Utah Territorial census William and Mary lived in the Salt Lake 16th Ward. They moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa in this same year. Further research is needed to determine the year Mary traveled to Utah and the name of the company with which she traveled.
