Daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Cottrell Vernon.  Although a biographical sketch written by Alice Vernon Moore, Edna Vernon Judd and Margaret Judd Gunn (found on the internet), says that the Vernon family traveled from Benton City, Wyoming to Salt Lake City in the 1868 Edward T. Mumford wagon train, there are no Vernons listed on the original hand-written roster of this company, nor does the famiy appear on the roster published in the Deseret News. (see http://famhistory1867.com/vernon.html and "Names of Passangers in Captain Mumford's Train," Deseret News [Weekly], 23 Sep. 1868, 257). There is, however, ample evidence that the family did arrive in Utah in 1868.  They crossed the Atlantic on the ship Emerald Isle that year and the obituary of Francis (Frank), Mary's brother who was born 10 February 1860, says he arrived in Utah when he was eight years old. See also the obituary of a sister, Sarah Jane and the 1900 census for Elizabeth, James and Joseph Vernon.  Additional research is needed to identify and document the name of the pioneer company with which they traveled.
