Mathew crossed the Atlantic on the ship Norfolk in 1844 with his wife (Sarah) and two children (Elizabeth, age 2 & William H., an infant). They all arrived at New Orleans 11 November 1844 but the two children must have died between the latter date and April 1851 when the 1850 Utah census was taken because the enumeration recorded that Mathew and Sarah had only one child, four-month-old Rosanna who was born in Deseret (i.e. Utah). Also in their household was Margaret Morrison, a nine year old who was reportedly born in Scotland. Previous to this, probably in 1849, Mathew secured a town lot in Salt Lake City and on 28 January 1851 both Mathew and Sarah received Patriarchal Blessings so they must have crossed the plains about 1848. For a short time the family lived in the Salt Lake City 6th Ward but on 15 May 1852 Mathew sold his land and relocated to West Jordan where he established a Woolen Factory not far from Gardner's Mill. However, at a Conference held at the Jordan Mill Branch Mathew and Sarah were "cut off from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for unbelief and reviling against the authorities." By the time of the 1860 federal census they were living at Arrow Rock, Saline County, Missouri (Margaret Morrison was still with them). Both Mathew and Sarah are buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Booneville, Cooper County, Missouri.
