Nancy Stewart

Nancy had been traveling with Almon Babbitt until August 31, 1856. She joined the Willie Company at that time. James Cantwell recorded: “Sunday August 31st Almon Babbit overtook us, a man named Sutherland was with him, also a woman named Nancy Stewart. The woman left them and came as a passenger in my wagon.” Despite the struggles that the Willie company eventually experience, this transfer to the Willie company saved Nancy Stewart’s life. A few days later, Babbitt and the few people traveling with his were attacked and killed by Native Americans.

Nancy left the company when they reached Ft. Laramie. Although erroneously identified by name in some sources, she is the woman who was discovered lost on September 18 when the company was camped at Ash Hollow.
