Ormus Eaton Bates immigrated to Utah with his family in 1862, as evidenced by Perpetual Emigration Fund records.
In 1868, he was an out-and-back teamster for the Mumford company. His name is mentioned in William James Kimber's life history concerning his experience of crossing the plains. His name was written as "Armis Bates." Also mentioned in Kimber's account was James Rathall, adjutant to Captain Mumford.
