Evidence that he initially traveled to Utah in 1850 comes from a letter written by his father, Levi Jackman, in which he expected his family to come to Utah that year. Further evidence proving that he arrived that year comes from his name appearing in the 1850 census, enumerated in spring 1851. His obituary also gives 1850 as his year of arrival in Utah.

Five years later he was "in charge of" one of three of the freight trains belonging to Thomas S. Williams and William Hooper, as indicated in the letter by Charles Smith.
