Although genealogical records have given his birth as Feb. 20, 1846, Mormon Church records (Gosher rebaptisms) give his birth as Apr. 20, 1846--which date is generally confirmed by emigration information.
His surname is listed as "Poulsen" on the 1854 Benjamin Adams ship manifest, but the inscription on his gravestone shows his name as "Powel Powelson."
