The Gillies family crossed the Atlantic on the ship S. Curling in 1856. The Gillies family started to Utah in 1856 in the Hodgetts company, but halted somewhere along the way. In 1857 they joined the Martin company to make another effort to get to Utah. Robert was traveling with his father who died on July 1 near the Elkhorn River. Between July 11 and July 17, he decided to stop traveling with the company and turn back. Some of the sources mistakenly give his father's age as 88 and also mistakenly give his name as John instead of Robert. They also misspell his surname as Gillis. The Gillies family reached Utah by 1859 as they were enumerated in the 1860 census in Beaver in July 1860. Robert's death date comes from a personal, online family history without any accompanying documentation. Further evidence is needed to confirm its accuracy.
