Sabino was born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico in 1832. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah on 25 June 1852 by James Ferguson and confirmed by Thomas Bullock, James Ferguson and Hosea Stout. Thomas Bullock, who was Clerk of the Church Historian's Office Journal's recorded that Sabino was the first Mexican to become a member of the Church, "the Sp[irit] of God being like a fire in our bones." Sabino's baptism is also recorded in the Early Church Information File.
His name does not appear on the 1850 Utah census, and his baptism on 25 June 1852 was prior to the arrival of that season's emigration, so he likely arrived in Utah in 1851. Further research is needed to confirm his year of arrival and the name of the pioneer company with which he traveled.
