There is no mention of a call for Elder James on 3 Aug 1836; however 3 Aug 1837 tells that he labored with Lorenzo D. Barnes. They assisted in building up a branch in Harrison Co., Virginia. 8 Oct 1837: tells of conference held that day.

Called at a special conference of the Church in Nauvoo, Ill, 16 Aug 1841 to a mission to Washington, D.C.
"Reuben Hedlock, John Cairnes, and Samuel James to England; . ." (24 Apr 1843 says: John Carnes to England.)
Samuel James served in company with Jonathan C. Wright for a short mission to Scott County Illinois
