He was born 9 August 1824 in Richmond, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, to Phinehas Richards and Wealthy Dewey. He was baptized at 14 years old, was ordained to the Priesthood, and sent out to labor as a missionary. In 1846 he left for Europe on his first foreign mission. He spent 16 years in performing missionary work. He died in Salt lake City, Utah, on 26 November 1909.

Volunteered for expedition to California and Oregon
Joseph Smith asked for volunteers to explore Oregon and California. They were also to preach wherever they went. The purpose of the expedition was to locate a suitable place for the Saints to dwell. Due to rapid changing circumstances and the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith the expedition did not occur.
Called to serve with his brother Franklin Dewey Richards. Mission was to assist Joseph Smith's presidential campaign and preach the gospel in Indiana. (Journal history, April 15, 1844, p. 2)
