It has long been assumed that Sarah was the daughter of William and Ann. However, Sarah was not their daughter. This information is supported by the 1841 English census and by Ann's obituary which indicated that Sarah was William's niece. Sarah is the same person as "Sarah Brightland."

Sarah appeared in the home of her uncle, William Clewley, in the 1850 Iowa census living in Pottawattamie County. (The census was taken before 6 July.) William died (according to Ann's obituary), on 12 July 1852 near the Platte River. Additional research is needed to determine if he died on the trail and to identify the name of the pioneer company with which Ann and Sarah Ann crossed the plains. (Church ordinance records prove they were in Utah before 3 October 1852.) Sarah Ann's birth date is from the Early Church Information File.

Sarah Ann and her aunt, Ann, sailed to America in 1849 on the ship Zetland, and the ship manifest lists their surname as "Clewley."

She was a member of the Salt Lake City 10th Ward when she was rebaptized 3 October 1852.
