Sarah Maria was previously placed with the Smith Humphrey family who traveled to Utah in 1850. Smith Humphrey was her uncle. He and his wife are listed as having brought two children with them. Those children could possible be Sarah Maria and Elizabeth. If this is the case, their son, John Proctor Humphrey, may not have traveled with them, or may be listed separately on company records. More research is required to determine when and how the Humphrey children traveled to Utah.
Sarah is listed in the home of her uncle, Smith Humphrey, in the 1850 Utah Census. Her name appears as "Maria Humphrey."
The inscription on her gravestone confirms her birth and death dates and shows her name as "Sarah Maria Humphries Love."
