He traveled in a party of sixteen men from San Francisco, leaving there on 15 April 1848. They were the first to carry mail from there to the Missouri River. They arrived in Salt Lake about mid-June. Silas remained in Salt Lake until August when he then traveled with twelve men back to Council Bluffs.
He was married to Sariah Aldridge on the return trip on the plains on 2 September 1849. At some point, the family continued on to California because in 1858, they are seen on the trail heading back east to Utah.
